“Your piano for singers course was so amazing. I can now play fairly skilful piano from zero (or one fingered synth) and I use your skills every day. You are such a naturally great teacher too.”

Why learn with me?

Hello, I’m Elizabeth and I use the piano for singing every day.

First Lecturer in Music Post aged 22. I taught for 25+ years in London including Visiting Lecturer - Westminster University (10 + years), Head of Vocals -London College of Contemporary Music, Southwark (16+ years), Director of BRIT KIDS -The BRIT School (Maternity cover).

I am fortunate to have classical musican parents. Cello and choral music was part of my childhood and I don’t remember learning to read music. But if that sounds irritatingly advantaged let me tell you it took a very long time to cross over to the chord interpretation, improv, rhythm section playing of commercial groove styles. These days I love it all and regularly call on the influence of both classical and commercial for my singing with piano.

I know exactly what you need from the piano for teaching. And, most importantly, what you can leave out.

9 ways I have used piano to teach singing

  1. Single-handedly run large group show rehearsals (I used to do this for BRIT Kids @ The BRIT School when we were at pre-tech stage).

  2. Slowly breakdown that tricky melody helping the student match pitch and get in the middle of the note

  3. Help the student experiment withdifferent keys, dynamics and tempos for their songs

  4. Accompany singing students in a broad range of styles from simple chord sheets — Bolero, Bossa nova, pop ballad, country, funk, RnB, Blues, Rock, Soul, Swing

  5. Help students prep for live performance, auditions and masterclasses (Dr. Matthew Knowles watched the last one)

  6. Personalise vocal warm ups to bring out phrasing styles and help them develop their artistry and aesthetic

  7. Teach Jazz vocal performance workshops accommodating different jazz styles, improv and song interpretation techniques (last one: Caer Llan Jazz, Wales)

  8. Access vocal warm ups — all the standard ones plus a few more, and to be flexible enough to switch them up as needed in that moment — to energise, to access body work and tap into creative ideas

  9. Teach 3 part (or even 4 part) vocal harmonies for A Cappella, SATB and counterpoint

What other singing teachers are saying:

“I came to Elizabeth as a lapsed classical pianist looking to develop my keyboard skills in different areas (choral accompaniment and jazz). Elizabeth is extremely knowledgeable in a range of genres and techniques and she is fabulous teacher - warm, encouraging and learner-focused. As a teacher myself, I really appreciated her effective communication and helpful resources. Her guidance and feedback helped me to develop my confidence as a musician.”

FAQ

Q: I’m a total beginner on piano—is PIANO JUMPSTART too advanced?
A: No. We start as though the piano keys are a mystery but we move swiftly. By Day 2 you’ll be laying down a pop accompaniment pattern. By focusing on a very specific narrow set of skills (piano for teaching singing) we can move things on purposely. If that sounds unrealistic it’s worth pointing out: you may be new to the piano, but you are NOT new to music. We can build on that.

Q: I’m not a beginner at the piano but I can’t play AND concentrate on my Voice students —will PIANO JUMPSTART help?
A: This is a common problem for singing teachers. And super frustrating because, unlike piano beginners, you would expect yourself to be able to play and teach. This course helps gets you into “Coach Mode” and find some of the missing pieces in your approach to piano which is preventing you from teaching at your best.

Q: I’m a singing teacher and I definitely want help with my piano for teaching but I’m more interested in some of the advanced techniques you mentioned — do you have a course for those?
A:CV-READY” is the more comprehensive piano for teaching programme. It goes into more depth and there is opportunity for feedback. SPECIALIST is for teachers with intermediate piano who want to get good at grooves for teaching popular song styles, phrasing and riffs . Drop a line for early bird entry — hello@themagnificentsinger.com

Q: My week is already very busy—what if I miss a day?
A: All lessons are on-demand. Catch up whenever, replay as you like. They are also designed for busy singing teachers — we get to the point

Q: How far will PIANO JUMPSTART take me with the piano?
A: You won’t be rattling out Chopin by Day 5 but that’s not the point. All this depends on the “Piano /Track Ratio” of your teaching studio or job. Some need a lot of piano, others just enough. Yes, you will learn highly relevant techniques that you can immediately apply to your studio. But the most important '“aha” moment, is understanding the possibilities of piano for successfully sharing YOUR teaching methodology. If you want go further with the piano you will understand what and how.

Q: Do I need any special equipment?
A: Access to a keyboard (even basic) or piano and a willingness to give it a go.

Q: Why is this only £49?
A: There is no glossy video production with snazzy edits. Maybe one day, but at present it’s all about a swift piano transformation for your singing teaching. I very much know my topic and this course gives you exactly that without any padding.
