How to use the map

Your singing aspirations may be modest or world-conqueringly ambitious — either way, it’s easy to get stuck in a phase. Progress in singing is messy, chaotic, and often doesn’t go to plan — so I’m wary of neat frameworks that promise to make it all easy… and yet, here I am presenting you with mine! Although we don’t — and shouldn’t — all follow the same path in singing, it is useful to have ideas to bounce off. Present a singer with an unappealing choice of direction they will immediately think of something they would much prefer to do instead! So this 7-phase map is not meant to be rigid followed. The point is to help the no-longer-21 singer through those “What should I do now?!” moments. Not random ideas either — they come from years of helping singers through their stuck points. Even if you disagree strongly, it will push on your thinking — and therefore your approach. You’ll be amazed how the smallest shift in perspective can change everything. Things tend to actually happen! There’s no finish line with singing — it’s not a competition — just a series of personal achievements that may be private or shared with the world. Enjoy the process. You’ll go round this several times.

✦ Map your magnificence

✦ The Map

Make Yourself Magnificent.

𝟏. Adventure Phase

Playing the Field.

Exploring and experiments. Trying stuff out. Learning what excites you — and what doesn’t. Essential. Also temporary.

𝟐. Curate Phase

Choosing Your Lane.

Committing. Letting go of endless options. Deciding what this chapter of your singing is actually about. Often avoided. Almost always necessary.

𝟑. Mastery Phase

Sharpening Your Singing.

Developing technique, control, consistency, and musicianship. You won’t need it all and not the end goal but some of this is vital.

𝟒. Art Phase

Making Magnificent Work.

Turning ability and taste into projects that exist. Singing that stands for something. Where many singers want to be — and don’t know how to enter.

𝟓. Headline Phase

Creating Thrilling Experiences.

Shows, concepts, performances that feel intentional and memorable. For you and perhaps others too.

𝟔. Authority Phase

Leading the Conversation.

Being trusted. Shaping taste. Influencing others through your work, not your credentials.

𝟕. Reinvent Phase

Changing the Game.

Letting go of what once worked.Reframing your role. Starting again — with more power.
